Gardening Into Fall
Though it’s still hot outside, August brings some of the last of summer’s heat. Many gardeners get started early in the season and maintain their gardens through the fall. But if you haven’t got started yet don’t worry, you still have plenty of time to grow delicious vegetables that can produce delicious crops through the first frost of fall. Autumn vegetable gardens are great for gardeners of all skills! Here are a few tips to creating an autumn vegetable garden.
Prepare: If you have an existing garden space already make sure you get rid of dead and dying plants along with weeds and other intrusive growths. Many of your plants can stay but make sure they are healthy. Harvest vegetables that are nearing maturity to make room for a new crop. Whether the space exists or not, be sure to add some fresh soil with plenty of nutrients either from your compost or from your local garden center.
What to Grow?: There are many vegetables that can thrive into fall and even beyond the first frost. Just be sure to take care of them and give them a little protection if you plan on harvesting later in the fall season. A few great vegetables to grow include kale, carrots, beets, collard, broccoli, cabbage, turnips, cauliflower, spinach and radish. Look at the needs of each vegetable and determine if it is a right fit for your needs and your climate zone.
Plant: Most gardeners plant vegetables from seeds but since its late in the season make sure you find fast seed starting mixes or transplant from elsewhere. You can use seeds from your own garden or purchase them from a garden center. After planting make sure you keep the seedlings well watered, especially in the last months of summer. If you don’t water enough then seedlings will dry up and die. Also be aware of summer pests that are still active. Since the plants are small pests can do a lot of damage and will die out before they are even able to be eaten.
